Medical Assistance: Providing medicines,
personal hygiene items, and more.
As in other areas of support, help with medicines is granted on an individual basis. In most cases, a valid prescription is necessary as well as a physician-provided medical history. Deep Well also provides referral support, and works in concert with organizations such as Volunteers in Medicine (VIM).
Often, special medical needs most people take for granted are simply unaffordable for families earning marginal incomes. And without our help, there are often tragic consequences. We have provided emergency dental care, medicines and assistance with eye glasses. In addition, as a preventative aid, we are able to provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, nutritional supplements, sanitary products and other personal hygiene items, often "packaging" them with food deliveries.
We Need Diapers & Wipes
Diapers in all sizes, but mostly sizes 3, 4 and 5.
And We Need Toothbrushes
We give out one for each family member with each food delivery.
Rent & Utilities
Financial aid in the form of rent and/or utility payments is granted on a needs basis, generally to individuals who have been residents of Hilton Head Island for at least three months, paying their own rent and utilities, before their application.
That process starts with a phone call to our office, with applicants being interviewed by a trained volunteer to determine eligibility. Payments are made directly to the utility or landlord, ensuring the money is spent on the intended purpose.
This short-term program is designed to provide emergency shelter to those who have lost their homes but
have a long term plan. A variety of reasons may prompt applicants to call Deep Well for this assistance.
Deep Well has negotiated special rates with certain approved commercial providers to ensure that the accommodation is safely located and is economical. In a typical year, Deep Well pays for 175-200 nights of shelter, at an average rate of $25 per night, for displaced Islanders.
Furniture and Appliances
A range of donated items are available to those eligible clients who simply cannot afford an essential item, particularly when emergency replacement is required.
The items are gently used and donated by home owners or from estates. Included are small appliances (toaster ovens, televisions, etc.), bedding (frames, mattresses and box springs), tables and chairs, dressers, bureaus, sofas and easy chairs, lamps, mirrors and more.
If you have items you would like to donate, and need a pick up, call the Deep Well office, 843-785-2849 to schedule.
