The Island Packet - December 13 - by Tom Barton  - Charities try to make holidays bright without Dove Street lights

Hilton Head Island charities are noticing the absence of a popular source of Christmas cheer -- and donations.

The Dove Street Festival of Lights, which dazzled islanders and visitors alike for two decades, ended its run last year.

A few on Dove Street will have traditional decorations this year, but the street won't feature the display many have grown accustomed to, said festival co-founder Paul Beckler.

Last year, organizers collected more than $12,000 for The Deep Well Project, which provides food for the hungry and emergency aid for rent, water and utility bills for the working poor, along with other services.

This year, Deep Well has collected about one-tenth what it normally does through its "Community Well," which is currently placed in Coligny Plaza near Dove Street. During December, volunteers accept money, nonperishable food and unwrapped gifts for children at that drop-off location. In the past, fesitval organizers have helped collect donations for Deep Well.

  • HARBOUR TOWN LIGHTS AND DEEP WELL FOOD DRIVE - November 23 to January 2

Enjoy The Lights! Stroll along the Harbour and enjoy the illuminated seasonal figures, with the centerpiece of the display being a towering 30-foot lighted Christmas tree. Harbour Town is the perfect place to be this holiday season for families.

Area elementary classes have created original works of art that best depict the holiday season in the Lowcountry and the artwork will be displayed in various shop windows around Harbour Town. Visitors will have an opportunity to vote for the artwork they like best by picking up a ballot at any participating Harbour Town shop.

Make A Difference. And while you’re enjoying the holiday season, you can help Deep Well make a difference in someone else’s life, too. Bring a canned good or two, or a new unwrapped children’s toy. Since 1973, the non-profit, volunteer-based Deep Well has been serving the basic needs of the less fortunate on Hilton Head Island.
