        THE DEEP WELL PROJECT

Reaching Deep For Islanders In  Need

FOOD

A phone call to the Deep Well Office begins the process. Families and individuals in need of nutritious food may call the Deep Well Office, speak to a volunteer to see if criteria are met, and then arrange for a food delivery based on need and eligibility. We consider a number of pre-determined criteria in approving a client and try to accommodate those with special dietary needs.

We run what could be called a "food pantry" staffed by volunteers. Gracious donors, particularly churches, schools and corporations run or manage food drives that collects the vast majority of the food donated to Deep Well.  In addition there are special events that also help our collection of food. The donated food is mostly dry or canned goods, such as cereals, canned fruits and vegetables, soups and stews, peanut butter and jellies, and the like. These are then transported to our facility and are sorted by date and stored on shelves, all by volunteers. Generous organizations such as Piggly Wiggly, Panera’s Bread and others provide us with some perishables, as does Second Helpings. What is not donated is purchased by Deep Well. Purchased items are mainly time sensitive foods like meats and dairy that have shorter shelf lives

An Isle in the Food Pantry

When a delivery to a client in need is approved, selected foods are picked, bagged and delivered by volunteers using their own vehicles. Quantities delivered cover many days, are standardized, and depend on family size and dietary needs.  You must have a working phone number to assure delivery.

Last year Deep Well delivered over 64,000 meals to those in need.
