Rent and Utilities
Payment of rent or utilities is granted on an individual basis, based
on need. Generally, you must have been a resident of Hilton Head
Island for three months before making an application. A phone call
to the office will begin the process and applicants will be
interviewed by a volunteer to determine eligibility.
Often a need for expensive medication, a cut in working hours, or some other sort of family emergency will disrupt income flow so that a person will miss that rent payment or utility bill. We help those who are caught in situations that are temporary and who will be able to help themselves when the emergency is over.
Payments are made directly to the utility or to a landlord, and not to a client, to ensure that the money is spent on the intended purpose
This is an all-to-frequent need on the island, as many of the
working poor live life without any financial safety net. Last year
we helped 711 families with emergency rent and utility payments.
