Keeping Children Engaged, Healthy & Happy
Providing needed support to families in need often means special support for children ages 1 through 12.
Our programs are designed to help them stay engaged in school, giving them the food and medicines they need to stay healthy, and during the holidays, surprises that put smiles on their faces for days.
The food and medicine support is addressed in other sections on this web site: "Food" and "Other Special Services."
Ensuring good health is available
Often, parents simply cannot afford the needed prescription medicines for their children.
Deep Well, based on referrals from schools and from parents directly, steps in to help by paying for the medicine directly. The most typically requested drugs are antibiotics, asthma medication, and hyper-activity medication. Deep Well also supplies lice kits and personal hygiene items to schools. And, while it's not medicine, Deep Well has diapers and related hygiene items for infants and toddlers.
Uniforms & School Supplies
All schools on Hilton Head Island require students to wear uniforms. Although they can be as simple as specified shirt types and colors and specific skirts/trousers, it can often be beyond many already-stretched budgets.
Each year, Deep Well provides vouchers which can be used to purchase approved uniform clothing at a pre-arranged provider's facilities. The $50 per child voucher doesn't cover all costs, but goes a long way toward easing the strain on a family's budget.
In addition, Deep Well also pulls together a package of school supplies that gives each child the basic tools they're expected to have when each school year starts.
Our "Santa Shop" Lets Parents Choose How To Surprise Their Children
This new approach, first used in December of 2013, is a departure from our previous long-standing programs, which were more in the form of handouts of toys and clothes to qualified families. Our Santa Shop is designed to allow parents to "shop" , without their children present, from a wide range of age-appropriate toys, clothes and books. It empowers them to make the choices that will be best for their children, and in a dignified way that is sure to result in a real holiday surprise for the kids.
In early December, we begin stocking our "Santa Shop" with a broad range of toys, books, crafts and activities, as well as clothes for children from ages 1 through 12. The toys are donated -- from individuals and organizations throughout the Island. And the clothes are purchased throughout the year, generally at deep discounts, by our veteran volunteer shoppers.
Parents come in at appointed times, either for a morning or afternoon session. Shelves are re-stocked between sessions to provide a full selection for everyone. For each child, parents were able to select a toy from each of two different groups, plus a game or stuffed animal, two books, a bag of stocking stuffers, and either an outfit or piece of outerwear. As we hoped it would, the new program seems to bring a greater sense of dignity to the parents, and greater joy to the children!
